Shotgun, it has all the feel of a classic 80’s cop movie, all the parts to make a great bad action movie. Hookers? Yup. Good cop, bad cop? It’s got both of ’em. The chief or captain always tearing down the hero cops, that too. But, it kind of falls short.
The beginning has us in some sort of international crime plot but then we are thrown into the L.A. beat with America’s most logical profession, hookering. A hooker gets killed, or at least knocked unconscious while her eyes are open, then another one actually gets killed and her brother, bad cop, gets pissed. The two cops assigned to the hooker killer are kind of lame. Bad cop ginger, also the hooker bro, wears a terrible Indiana Jones had and a sweater that isn’t on right, maybe a long coat too…it’s a western-MacGyver-My Two Dads look…his black partner is just a black cop. They are not very good at policing, a lot of sleeping and eating, but they seem to know people and the lingo so it is what it is.
So bad cop ginger cowboy gets pretty upset when his sister is killed and goes on a “rampage” with a shotgun…hence the name, shooting people. But, he is killing them, he is bringing them in on bounties…as a bounty hunter. So, he is not a renegade ex-cop taking the law into his own hands. He is a cop that got fired and picked up work as a bounty hunter. He ditches his stupid hat and jacket for a stupider jacket and the pony-tail. I really feel they dropped the ball on the costume opportunity here. Why not have a bad-ass “Shotgun” outfit that he wears in his justice phase? Whatever. He eventually rallies to go down Mexico to find the real bad guy, or at least his hangout. We find out in the midst of all this who the bad guy is, don’t get excited it’s no twist.
There are some reasonably funny lines, some boobies make an appearance and maybe a couple of funny scenes but other than that this movie is pretty generic. If you find yourself with a convenient opportunity to watch it, sure, have at it.
